Mind Bender # 12: Solution

My apologies for not providing you with the solution before now. However, the past few weeks have been rather hectic.

You needed to sit back and think on this Mind Bender.

Clearly, the solution can be found by counting the number of matches in each round, until you reach the final for both the Men’s and Women’s singles competitions.

But only Nigel, Graham, Matt and Paul hit upon what is the most elegant solution – well done!

To obtain one winner …

* For the Men – there needs to be 456 losers.
* For the Women – there needs to be 345 losers.

Every loser is the result of a match having been played. Therefore, you are able to quickly calculate the total as being 801 (ie: 456 + 345) matches needing to be played.
